You can build with slabs when they're soft, as with the strawberry pot, or you can wait for the slab to become firm, which will take 6-20hrs depending on temperature.

Key points to remember:

  • If in doubt use vinegar slip and lots of deep scoring when joining slabs (it is by no means always necessary, but never hurts).

  • You can't ball-up waste clay and reuse it as you'll trap air, these air pockets will cause explosions in the kiln as the trapped air expands.

  • Be fastidious about cleaning, with a damp cloth or sponge, clay dust is bad for you.

After you've rolled you slab you might want to let is dry for an hour or two before building with it, so that it's easier to handle.

Candle Lantern (hard slabs)

It's best not to handle the slab after it's rolled, but instead let it dry on the board so it remains flat.
