HAND BUILDING, CASTING & DECORATION WORKSHOPS
Each workshop will begin with a 20minute demonstration, after which participants will have 1.5hrs to work on a self-directed project with the help and guidance of a tutor. These workshops are suitable for beginners and improvers and are for developing new skills, or in some cases tools, which can be applied during access sessions. As there are only 6 participants there is plenty of time for 1:1 support and everyone will be working on slightly different projects, so it is a great chance to learn from each other.
Sculptural Forms with Micaela Schoop
Micaela will take you through a variety of techniques used in creating sculptural forms, including double walled forms, using coils, darts, inserting concave elements, hollowing out solid forms, constructing armatures and making props for firing.
If you have your own projects that you're working on and you'd like Micaela's help, bring it along, otherwise you'll have chance to try a few techniques and you'll leave with lots of ideas and tricks of the trade.
Dates: Wednesday 28th April, 6.30- 9pm
Plaster Casting with Louise Smith
On this workshop you can make a bowl or plate mould, a sprig mould and/or a range of plaster stamps (you choose what to focus on). Plaster moulds can be made of found forms (plastic beakers etc.), materials such as wax or from clay; on this workshop you will make your 'master forms' from clay, unless you have a found form you wish to bring, but Louise will talk you through the process of using found forms and also outline the many other possibilities for plaster moulds, including texture plates & rollers and the principles of multi-part slip-casting moulds.
Dates: Saturday 1st May, 2.30- 5pm
Dipping & Painting Glazes, with Louise Smith
Louise will start with a 20 minute talk & demo, looking at the effects that can be achieved by combining glazes, the qualities of different glazes and the uses of wax.
You will then have just over 1.5hrs to glaze your work. Work will be weighed all together and charged at 60pence per 50grams (around 30% off the usual dipping price) and you will have access to all the dipping and painting glazes, and wax resist. You will be able to combine dipping glazes, and combine dipping glazes with painting glazes. You will need to bring your own brushes, the shop will be open for 30minutes before the workshop.
Dates: Tuesday 4th May, 6.30- 9pm
Decorating with slips and underglazes, with Hazel Critchley
Hazel will demonstrate a range of techniques, including stencils, sgraffito and wax resist and will then guide you through decorating your pieces. You will need to bring along some work at the leather-hard stage and some bisque fired work.
You will need to bring your own slips, underglazes and brushes, the shop will be open for 30minutes before the workshop.
Dates: Saturday 8th May, 2.30- 5pm
Numbers are limited to six, so there is lots of time for 1:1 tuition.
Participants should know how to centre clay before attending this workshop, beyond that these they are suitable for beginners and improvers. Tutors will help participants develop good habits & new skills and set goals. As there are only 6 participants there is plenty of time for 1:1 support and everyone will be working on slightly different projects, so it is a great chance to learn from each other.
